Film Launch

This film was purposely developed to demonstrate how the Community of Merthyr Tydfil came together in response to the pandemic.  The pressure Voluntary Organisations faced during this time was unprecedented, and as you will see within the film, they worked together and with partner agencies to offer support and put their arms around the Community.  The film also captures how additional Covid related funding provided benefit locally.

The shortened version was launched at our AGM, and we’re pleased to now share the full version with you.

VAMT would like to give huge thanks to everyone involved in the making of this film.  Sit back and enjoy!

Do you know a young person or group who deserves to be recognised for their outstanding efforts?

The High Sheriff Awards panel would like to reward young people in Mid Glamorgan who have made outstanding contributions either at home or in the community during 2021.  Youngsters in particular have shown great bravery and resilience during the Coronavirus pandemic and it would be wonderful if they could be recognised for their outstanding achievements.

The Pandemic halted our Awards evening in 2021 but we aim to hold a 2022 event and reward deserving youngsters with thousands of pounds in cash prizes for their time and effort, taking part in initiatives which stand out amongst their peers.  They may have helped their local neighbourhood, an individual or a local organisation or even achieved a sporting or academic achievement.

So, if you or anyone in your organisation/workplace knows of a person or group aged between 11-21 who could be nominated for an award and a cash prize of up to £1000 and all we ask is for a nominator aged over 18 to fill in the application form and as promised in an earlier email I am attaching a copy of the form.  The form can be emailed back to us on   highsheriffmidglamorganawards@gmail.com or posted to me at Rickyard House, Longlands Farm, Pyle CF33 6PU.

Royal Voluntary Service mobilises volunteers in every corner of Britain to support people in need and the NHS.

Their volunteers work with healthcare teams and in communities providing practical help and emotional support when people are struggling to cope.

Since the beginning of the pandemic they have focussed on providing a telephone befriending service for the vulnerable and isolated over 50s. This takes the form of a weekly check in and chat with one of their volunteers, and in some cases was the only social contact their clients had. As restrictions have eased, they have since been able to expand to accompanied walks, and recently home visits too.

Befriending Week - the Good Friendship Group

Befriending Week is all about celebrating the fantastic befriending organisations that we have in Merthyr Tydfil. The Good Friendship group is one of these organisations, here's some more information ..

They are based at Dowlais Engine House and provide a warm, supportive group for people aged 50+ in the Merthyr area. They provide well needed contact, good will parcels and newsletters delivered in person via a doorstep drop. 100% of recipients valued not only the parcels but the human contact even behind visors and masks turning up at a set time, as some said was the highlight of the day. Befriending is a big part of the group role with its members. The group is now back meeting face to face again at the Engine House and the Community Garden.

Here's what it means to individuals "“Weeks of lockdown were much more bearable knowing there was so much support and that help was just a phone call away, many, many, thanks”

October's Inform for your information

 Inform Anti-poverty special

Natasha's Law - do you provide "pre-packed for direct sale" food??

Natasha’s Law – charities need to be aware of new laws around allergen labelling

On 1 October 2021, the way that organisations provide allergen information on ‘pre-packed for direct sale’ (PPDS) food has changed. The changes have come about following a campaign by the parents of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who tragically died from an allergic reaction to a Pret-a-Manger baguette which contained sesame seeds to which she was severely allergic. Charities, including those running care homes, schools and hospitals, which offer PPDS food need to be aware of the changes and implement the required labelling changes. Charities with trading companies should also consider whether they provide PPDS food. The changes affect England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

What is PPDS food?
PPDS is food which is packaged at the same place that it is offered to consumers and is in packaging before it is ordered or selected. Examples of PPDS food are sandwiches, salads, bakery items, and burgers or other fast food which is packaged and is kept under heat lamps and cannot be altered without removing the packaging. It can include food that a customer selects themselves (e.g. from a display unit) as well as products kept behind a counter and some food sold at mobile or temporary outlets. The Food Standards Agency has an Allergen and ingredients food labelling decision tool which can help you ascertain whether the food items you are selling are PPDS foods.

What is not PPDS food?
Any food that is not in packaging or is packaged after being ordered by the consumer is not a PPDS food. These are types of non-prepacked food and do not require a label with name, ingredients and allergens emphasised. Allergen information must still be provided but this can be done through other means, including orally. Food packed by one business and supplied to another business is prepacked food and already must have full labelling, including the name of the food and a full ingredients list, with allergenic ingredients emphasised within it.

Food deliveries/distance selling
The change to labelling requirements does not apply to PPDS food sold by means of distance selling, such as food that can be purchased over the phone or on the internet. Businesses selling PPDS food this way will need to ensure that mandatory allergen information is available to the consumer before they purchase the product and also at the moment of delivery.

What is changing?
Labelling will be required on all food which is PPDS. This change means that allergen information will be included on the label of each item of PPDS food to enable people to make safe choices.

What will need to be included on the label?
The label should state the name of the food (e.g. Cheese and Tomato sandwich) and then include a full list of ingredients. If any of the 14 allergens required to be declared by law are contained in the food they must be emphasised on the list, for example, by making them bold.

What should we do now?
You need to check whether your charity or trading company provides any PPDS food. Detailed guidance on the steps that you need to take as well as sector specific guidance is available from the Food Standards Agency.
